Digital Leadership Support
Senior technology leadership for schools, trusts and colleges when you need direction, capacity or challenge, without appointing a full-time CIO, CTO or CISO.
What this is
Vector-Ops provides flexible senior leadership support: agreed day-rate input, ongoing fractional CIO-style support, or coaching and senior cover for existing leaders and teams.
This is not an audit or a one-off review. It is practical leadership support for organisations that need senior judgement, clearer decision-making, board-level advice, supplier challenge or help keeping the technology roadmap moving. If what you need is a one-off independent view instead, that is a full governance and maturity review or a focused pillar review.
Common reasons clients ask for this
The questions it answers
What you get
One model, three ways in, depending on how much you need and for how long. We agree the shape with you before anything starts.
Day rate
Flexible senior technology support at an agreed day rate. This works when you need CIO, CTO or CISO-style input for meetings, decisions, supplier calls, roadmap review, executive advice or project challenge, without committing to a long-term package.
BookingDays can be booked as you need them, or locked in to an agreed pattern.
Ongoing
Longer-term senior technology leadership for organisations that need regular support and continuity. It works well where Vector-Ops acts as the senior technology lead, supports an existing IT lead, or provides independent leadership over an MSP relationship.
Can includeScheduled leadership days, email support answered within one working day, board and executive reporting, roadmap ownership, supplier challenge, governance rhythm, and support for internal leaders.
Coaching and cover
Support for an existing IT lead, digital lead, senior leader or team that needs coaching, challenge, mentoring or temporary senior cover while a permanent role is considered.
Can includeRegular one-to-one support, review of decisions and priorities, preparation for board reporting, help structuring governance, and challenge around risk, suppliers, projects and roadmap delivery.
A note on independence. The same rule applies here as everywhere else. We hold no stake in anything we recommend, and we will not use a leadership seat to steer you towards a supplier. If we think you need a permanent hire rather than us, we will say so. Why independence matters.
A note for internal IT teams: this is cover above you or alongside you, not scrutiny of you. Most of the value is in translating your judgement into the language leadership funds, and in taking supplier pressure off your desk.
Common questions
Fractional is part-time and ongoing: a few days a month or a week, held over a longer period, so it becomes a standing part of your leadership. Interim is full-time and temporary, filling a specific gap for a few months. Trusts that need direction, board interface and continuity usually want fractional. Trusts that have lost their IT director mid-project usually want interim cover. Our day-rate and coaching options sit alongside both.
It depends on the size of the estate and how much of the need is board interface versus operational grip. A single secondary or a small trust is often one to two days a month. A larger trust, or one in the middle of a change, is usually more. With the day-rate option you can book as you go. With ongoing support we agree a pattern and review it each term.
Yes, and it is the most common shape. Your IT manager keeps operational ownership while we hold direction, board interface and supplier challenge above or alongside them. Where there is an MSP, we can provide the independent senior leadership over that relationship. Most internal leads find it makes their case for investment considerably easier to land.
We can, and a leadership engagement often starts with a full review or a focused pillar review. But we will not use a leadership seat to sell you reviews you do not need, and any review work is scoped and priced separately and openly. The leadership support itself is practical judgement and challenge, not an audit.
That is often the intended outcome, and we plan for it. Coaching and cover are temporary by design. For ongoing support, we build towards a clear handover, whether that is a permanent hire, a promoted internal lead or a reduced advisory remit. You are never locked in, and there is no long notice period holding you in place.

Book a scoping call. Thirty minutes, no obligation, nothing sold on it. Tell us where the gap is and we will suggest the right shape, or tell you honestly if a permanent appointment is the better answer.
