I grew up on a council estate in West Yorkshire, in a home with a lot going on, and left school with a reading age of eleven. Not because I could not learn, but because nothing around me made learning a priority.

At seventeen I was at college, a bit lost, trying, but with no real idea what I wanted from life. Then I became a father, and everything changed. Drifting became purpose. I knew I had to make it work, not just for me, but for my daughter.

I got through that period because one teacher chose to stand up for me. He saw I was struggling in a way that was not about effort, and encouraged me to get assessed. That led to my diagnosis of dyslexia and dysgraphia, finally giving names to things I had wrestled with my whole life.

He went far beyond anything his job required. He did not just teach me; he backed me through some of the hardest years I had known.

He had nothing to gain from it. He simply believed I could get there, and because he did, I did.

That changed how I saw education. It was not just about qualifications. It was a route to a better life for me and my family. So I threw everything at it, working while studying full time, earning distinctions, becoming my college’s student of the year, and later building a career in education technology.

Since then, I have worked across education IT from several sides of the table: inside universities, inside a multi-academy trust, as an MSP technology leader, and as a non-executive director on a risk and audit committee.

One thing became clear. In schools, trusts and colleges, leaders are often accountable for technology without being given a clear, independent view of whether it is working, safe, well governed, value for money or aligned to what the organisation is trying to achieve.

Teams are stretched. Budgets are tight. Suppliers have their own incentives. And the questions that matter can go unanswered:

• Is our IT actually working for staff and pupils?
• Are safeguarding, cyber and data risks properly understood?
• Are we getting value from suppliers and systems?
• Do we have a clear roadmap, or are we just reacting?
• Does our technology support the purpose of the organisation?

Vector-Ops exists to answer those questions.

We provide independent technology assurance for schools, trusts and colleges. We show leaders where they stand, what the evidence says, where the risks are, and what needs to happen next.

We do not sell IT systems, run your helpdesk or push supplier products. Our role is to give you an honest view, a clear benchmark of what good looks like, and a practical route forward.

In a way, Vector-Ops exists because of what that teacher did for me: turn up genuinely on your side, tell the truth, expect more, and help you get there.
